Current EPC Requirements for Landlords

• Properties must meet at least an E rating on a valid EPC before being let or re-let
• This applies to new tenancies and existing rental agreements
• It is unlawful to rent out a property that does not meet the minimum standard without an approved exemption
• Landlords who fail to comply may face financial penalties of up to £5,000 per property, along with enforcement action

The government has also consulted on proposals to raise minimum EPC standards in the future (potentially to C rating targets in the coming years), meaning improving energy efficiency now can help future-proof rental portfolios.
